PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST
A treasure in the back door of downtown Asheville, Pisgah National Forest offers a vast array of hiking and mountain biking trails. A late afternoon mountain bike ride in Bent Creek is invigorating; one almost feels like a kid again once you top that climb and coast down the other side.
THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
A paved road rated one of the top 10 natural wonders of North Carolina? Upon driving this National Park, it is easy to understand why. TheParkway‘s scenic vistas are awe-inspiring, even just a few miles outside of Asheville. But be sure to stop along the way and enjoy sections of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, another top-10 pick here in Western North Carolina.
THE FRENCH BROAD RIVER
One of the oldest rivers in the world, and one of only a few that flows north, The French Broad is a delightful float trip on many sections from near Brevard to just north of downtown Asheville. From there, it offers more exciting whitewater for the adventurous. Southern Waterways or Headwaters Outfitters in Rosman can set you and your friends and family up for a delightful day on the river watching the wildlife that includes beaver, muskrats, wood ducks, belted kingfisher, frogs and a variety of fish.
